The Key to Freezing Blueberries

Posted On: April 6, 2018

What do you prefer, fresh or frozen blueberries? If you ask us, not much can compete with the taste and texture of a ripe blueberry freshly harvested from our fields in Trujillo, Peru. However, there are times when you wish to extend the longevity of your favorite blue fruit or to simply ensure that you’ll always have some on hand for those spur of the moment cravings – and in those cases, freezing is a great option. Of course, freezing blueberries isn’t rocket science, but it does require a touch of something often overlooked: care. Though full of powerful health benefits, the berries themselves can be quite fragile which is why we’ve outlined a simple three-step guide to help you in achieving individually frozen blueberries, as opposed to one icy mass.

Step 1: Don’t wash the little blues!
This may come as a shocker, but washing fresh blueberries prior to freezing is unnecessary thanks to their waxy coating known as ‘bloom.’ This layer, protective against pests, gives the berries a surface which is naturally nonstick. Washing them could potentially do away with the bloom, causing you to spend more time than you’d like in attempting to dry the berries off.

Step 2: Let ‘em roll
Onto a sheet pan that is. You’ll want to empty your carton of The Berry That Cares blueberries onto a flat surface that can enter inside your freezer. Make sure that the berries are in a single layer, then pop it into the freezer for at least an hour.

Step 3: Our lids are sealed
Once frozen, transfer your blueberries to a jar or any sealed container (even plastic zip bags work great). Since they were frozen as a single layer, the berries won’t latch onto each other, meaning they’ll be easy to sprinkle into a muffin or pancake mix, or atop a bowl of steaming oatmeal.

Once frozen, enjoy your blueberries all year around at any moment with these recipe ideas:

  • Blend a handful of frozen berries into your smoothie to add a burst of flavor and vitamins. We like to add ours to a mix of banana, spinach and almond milk!
  • Skip generic ice cubes. Serve up a glass of ‘ice’ water by adding in some frozen fruit to instantly cool the temperature and add some color. Don’t forget to toss a sprig or two of mint to make your cool drink truly fresh.
  • Keep in mind that mixes for baked items such as muffins and cobblers don’t require the berries to be thawed beforehand!
